Track record

Two products built from zero as technical cofounder, and eight years at Branch Metrics helping grow it from no revenue to $100M ARR.

Sightline OS

Technical cofounder · 2025–26

I built the entire product solo: a Python data-ingestion pipeline on AWS, Postgres storage, and a Next.js web app that turns messy supply-chain data into insights for restaurant teams. Sightline's customers include national operators like Din Tai Fung and Bonchon. I built it over a year, then hired and onboarded the engineers who run it now.

Branch Metrics

Early engineer → head of product · 2015–23

I joined Branch pre-Series A as one of the first few engineers and stayed eight years: two in engineering on core product and Branch's first paid products, then six in product, eventually running the team. I led the Facebook attribution integration that anchored the ads business and became the template for the Google, Snap, and TikTok integrations after it. Branch went from no revenue to $100M ARR, and from a handful of people to 500+, while I was there.

The League

Technical cofounder · 2014

As the sole engineer, I built the entire product end to end: the iOS app and the LinkedIn/Facebook screening engine that became the app's signature. We launched in San Francisco in 2014 to the first thousands of users. The app was later acquired by Match Group for ~$30M.

What people I've built with say

Mike Molinet
Derrick was one of our first hires at Branch early on. He came in as an engineer, moved into product, and ended up running the product team as we scaled from zero to $100M ARR. He was deeply involved in many aspects of the business as we grew from a 5 person team to 500 employees. If you're building something from nothing, he's one of the few people I'd trust to actually do it.

Alex Bauer
I worked with Derrick for the better part of seven years at Branch, most closely while he ran product management. When Derrick took ownership of something, he went deeper than anyone else in the company; nothing he shipped ever arrived half-baked. He kept Branch's entire product development machine turning through the iOS 14/15 upheaval (if you were in mobile attribution then, you know), and he was equally credible doing it with engineers and in front of enterprise customers. If you need someone to own a zero-to-one build end to end, Derrick is the call.

Tomas Vacek
Derrick is a fantastic iPhone app developer and I would highly recommend him for other projects. He is very skilled, quick in execution and responsive to the client. He produced an app for my family's company that had the full agreed-upon functionality, including Facebook login / friends interaction, database management, saving/loading pictures, table layout views, custom screen outputs, various types of input fields, etc. Furthermore, Derrick is very friendly and always a pleasure to work with!

Two ways to work with me

Build

You have an idea, a budget, and no engineering team yet.

I write the product. Month one: we cut the idea down to the smallest version worth putting in front of real users, and I start building it that week. You see working software, not documents, inside the first two weeks.

Shape
Sole engineer, end to end
Length
Typically 3–6 months
Cadence
Weekly demo, daily in your Slack
Ends with
A live product and a codebase your future engineers can pick up

Fractional CTO

You have engineers, but no one owning technical direction or the hiring calls.

I run the engineering and product function part-time. Month one: I get into the codebase and the roadmap, then tell you plainly what I found and what I'd change. After that I own technical direction, hiring, and the calls between shipping fast and shipping something you can build on.

Shape
Engineering and product lead
Length
Ongoing, 3-month minimum
Cadence
1–2 days a week, standing weekly
Ends with
A team and a roadmap that don't need me

I take on a small number of engagements at a time. New York-based, working US hours. Note: if you are looking for a full-time technical co-founder, please indicate this when reaching out.

Start a project

Tell me what you're building and where it stands. Name, email, and a few sentences are all I need — the rest is optional, and helps me come to a first call prepared.
